How to Choose the Right Shrink Film for your Packaging Line (and Avoid the Common Mistakes)

Shrink film looks simple from the outside. You wrap a product, apply heat, and the film tightens around it. Done. But anyone who’s run a packaging line for more than a few months knows the reality is messier. Film that seals beautifully on one product tears on another. A gauge that works fine in summer creates brittle seals in a cold warehouse. The wrong choice costs you time, waste, and frustrated customers.

Here’s a practical breakdown of what actually matters when selecting shrink film, based on how real packaging operations make these decisions.

Understand the film types before anything else

The two most common materials you’ll encounter are polyolefin (POF) and PVC. Polyolefin is the workhorse for most food, retail, and e-commerce applications. It’s FDA-compliant, produces minimal odor during sealing, and handles irregular shapes without cracking. PVC is cheaper per roll and seals faster, but it releases chlorine gas when burned, making it a poor fit for food contact or enclosed production environments. Many operations that started on PVC have moved away from it for that reason alone.

Beyond those two, you’ll run into specialty films: cross-linked polyolefin for sharper, glossier finishes on retail display items, and centerfold vs. single-wound configurations depending on your sealing equipment. Centerfold is more common for L-bar sealers. Single-wound suits sleeve wrappers and high-speed lines.

Gauge matters more than most buyers think

Gauge is film thickness, measured in gauge units or microns. Thicker isn’t always better. A 100-gauge POF film works for lightweight retail products. Match shrink ratio to your product geometry

A film rated 40% transverse shrink can contract 40% across its width. That flexibility is what lets one film accommodate different product sizes on the same line.

For irregularly shaped products, bundled items, or anything with significant height variation, you want a high free shrink ratio in both directions. Flat, uniform products like DVDs or boxed goods can get by with a more modest ratio. Check the technical data sheet, not just the sales sheet.

Heat tunnel settings are half the equation

Bad film gets blamed for problems that are actually tunnel problems. If your tunnel temperature is too low, the film won’t fully contract and you get dog ears or loose wraps. Too high, and you scorch the film or distort heat-sensitive labels. Most POF films perform in the 250 to 350 degree Fahrenheit range, but the exact settings depend on your conveyor speed, tunnel length, and ambient warehouse temperature.

Run test packs whenever you switch film suppliers or gauges. Document your successful settings for each product SKU and treat them like a recipe. This alone eliminates a huge percentage of line waste.

Factor in sustainability now, not later

Regulations on single-use plastics are tightening in multiple states, and many retail buyers now ask vendors about packaging sustainability as part of supplier qualification. Biodegradable shrink films exist, though they carry a price premium and have some performance tradeoffs at higher temperatures. Recycled-content films are more practical for most operations right now.
